Ligature resistant grab bars that meet BC accessibility guidelines

I am working on a project in Vancouver BC and my designer is struggling with reconciling the BC accessibility requirements with the need for ligature resistant grab bars.

They require the following:

  • L-shaped grab bars for accessible washrooms, the vertical and horizontal component needs to be minimum 760mm. There are approximately 11 or 12 washrooms that would require the 760mm L-shaped grab bars.
  • A larger one for a public shower that is 1000mm (horizontal) x 750mm (vertical).

Other Requirements – ligature resistant, durable, hygienic (meets IPC requirements), good water drainage.

How do you approach it if they can not find a product that meets both? Does ligature resistance trump BC accessibility? Can they apply for an exemption? Does anyone have experience with this that they can share?

Here’s what we’d use for a ligature resistant, hygenic grab bar, with good water drainage.

Thanks Frank,

I will forward on to the designer.
