Feedback needed of a post from the Pediatric Environment Network

Hi all - any suggestions will be reposted in the PEN Discourse. Thanks!

We are looking to build a subset of beds within our behavioral health unit for medically complex children. We are wondering who else is doing this today and what, if any types of patients are excluded from being cared for in your behavioral unit. We know there are several medical units that see behavioral patients but our unit will be a BH unit and licensed by the Department of Mental Health. Thanks in advance!

Hello,

We’ve been integrating secure headwalls in many MH units so staff have less of this dilemma in milieu management. This depends greatly on the cost, context, condition and care model, among other factors.

Otherwise, some Med Psych-capable suites have been integrated directly into some BH units as you describe.

We’ve also explored a flex Med Psych suite between the Pediatric Unit and BH unit for one project. Allowing either Peds or BH units to expand into the more acute-capable beds as needed while preserving separate flows and safe patient transfers.

Cheers,

SP
