Kingsway Door Challenges

Hello, all-

We have the Kingsway SWING Anti-Barricade Door System (Leaf & Half) installed at two Patient of Size Rooms at a project in Oklahoma. The AHJ commented on the installation of the manual flush bolts that were installed with the doors.

Per NFPA 101-2012 18.3.6.3.8, Corridor doors utilizing an inactive leaf shall have automatic flush bolts on the inactive leaf to provide positive latching. The layout of the floor plan is designed to allow for flexibility within the units; therefore, suites were not provided and the doors/walls to patient rooms from corridor carry the ‘ability to resist the passage of smoke’ rating.
Kingsway has stated they provide manual flush bolts on the SWING Leaf & Half doors. The design team presumes this is due to ligature concerns with an automatic flush bolt.

To meet the Patient of Size door opening requirement of 54" two door leafs must be provided because the code permits a max of 48" door leaf. The remaining patient room doors in the project are the Kingsway SWING and to keep a consistent product, the Leaf & Half version were selected for the Patient of Size Rooms.

Our current response to the AHJ is, that for patient safety, manual flush bolts are provided.

Has anyone else run into this issue?
